The Treasures of the Deep Blue Sea
06/04/2020
The Solent washing the quay walls is brown,
but there's sea in a built up part of town.
The hospital lift voice signals floor E;
the doors glide open softly as can be.
A sign tells we've reached famous Ocean Ward
that pleased patients' parents keenly applaud,
for here they care for children whose hearts are new;
Isaac came when his surg'ry was due.
To enter you press a buzzer and speak,
then tell the kind answering voice whom you seek.
As you enter the floor is a gorgeous blue,
maybe of bluebells or cornflower the hue.
Small fish swim in this decorative space,
but it's nurses who care for every case
who are some of the treasures of this sea
that has no sandy beach, no stone ships' quay.
Of course the children who've found their ways here
as the most prized treasures receive due care.
Wee Isaac came with a hole in his heart;
a world-class surgeon patched with a pig's part.
Doctors are treasures for the great work they do,
parents are thrilled and keep saying 'Thank you.'
Side wards named Coral, Seahorse, Dolphin, Shell;
where Isaac is - Starfish, which you can tell
by the bright painted emblem on the wall;
it's the fairest picture for one so small.
Nurse in blue washes Isaac tenderly
and checks his monitored readings hourly:
oxygen, blood pressure, breathing, heart rate.
since from him several wires radiate -
Nurses use oceans of care and kindness
and work in a state of much cleanliness.
You'd find treasures should you visit this ward -
children with nurses and doctors adored.
